Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a combat sport focused on ground techniques, joint locks, and chokes; suitable for beginners and advanced students from age 15, and develops strength, endurance, coordination, and self-defense
Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a very popular and rapidly growing combat sport. Unlike many other martial arts, it does not rely on punches and kicks to neutralize an opponent, but on joint locks and chokeholds. In simple terms, it can be described as MMA without strikes.
There are two main variants: with a gi and without a gi (no-gi), also known as grappling. The techniques in both disciplines are very similar. A match begins standing, where both opponents use wrestling techniques such as takedowns, trips, off-balancing, and throws to bring the fight to the ground. From there, they work toward submission techniques such as chokes and joint locks.
BJJ improves physical fitness, coordination, and spatial awareness. The minimum age for both men and women is 15. If a suitable sparring partner of similar weight can be found, a younger age may be possible by individual agreement. There is no upper age limit, and your starting fitness level does not matter.
BJJ is also useful for anyone who wants to learn self-defense. If you choose to box with an opponent, there is a good chance you will get hit as well. If you can take them to the ground and control them, it may be a much safer way to handle the situation. These techniques are taught carefully and step by step during the classes.
Classes are led by Renzo Gracie Prague instructors Michal and Tomáš. They are experienced coaches with many years of competitive and coaching practice in both stand-up and ground-based disciplines such as BJJ, MMA, and kickboxing. They have taken part in matches, seminars, and training sessions across Europe and in other countries as well. Their background in self-defense, security, planning, and consulting also comes from long-term work in the security field. They teach proven techniques and, when needed, are happy to recommend other specialists in related areas. They are here so you can ask questions, learn, and develop your skills. Private training sessions can also be arranged.
BJJ is a demanding full-body sport. Training develops strength, endurance, and flexibility, all of which contribute to better overall fitness.
Beginner BJJ classes are for anyone who wants to learn new skills and improve both physical and mental resilience. BJJ is not just a combat sport and martial art, but also a path to better fitness, self-defense, and discovering your own potential.
What you can look forward to:
You will not be doing it alone. The community is full of people who started exactly where you are now and are happy to help you in the beginning. Over time, you will develop not only physical strength, but also mental toughness and strategic thinking. BJJ is about cooperation, respect, and personal growth.
In beginner classes, the focus is on fundamentals, explaining the principles of BJJ, and breaking down basic movements, positions, and techniques. This will help you feel more comfortable and confident in drills and sparring, and it will make it easier to build toward more advanced positions and techniques in the future.
During these classes, you will work on:
These skills will give you a solid foundation for more advanced techniques and more complex situations.
For your first training session, bring comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. Shoes and any special equipment are not needed. Later on, we recommend getting a mouthguard and, if you want, a gi as well. Your coach will be happy to help you choose.
Please check in advance with the Centrum reception or by email at info@arenapk.cz to confirm whether a specific class is taking place and whether there is available capacity.
